DO NOT USE MOUTH RINSES: Most mouthwashes contain alcohol and other ingredients which can irritate oral tissues.
DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE: Some toothpaste contain ingredients which may cause irritation. As a substitute, try making a paste of baking soda and water. Try this for about three months. If it seems to help, try switching to a mild toothpaste such as Crest For Kids.
AVOID CERTAIN FOODS: Although there is no known relationship between aphthous ulcers and food allergies certain foods such as chocolate, nuts, tomatoes, citrus fruits and carbonated soft drinks may act as precipitating factors. You will need to avoid these foods for two to three months in order to tell whether this provides you with any relief from your ulcers.
PRACTICE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE: Keeping your teeth clean and free of plaque helps reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in your mouth. Always use a soft bristle toothbrush to avoid trauma to the gums and soft tissues.
USE ZILACTIN-B FOR RELIEF: Zilactin-B is a non-prescription medicine formulated to provide relief of pain and to promote healing of intraoral sores and ulcers. It provides a protective coating over the ulcers and shields them from potentially irritating substances and trauma. Zilactin-B also contains a topical anesthetic to relieve pain. The film may last for up to six hours. If you use prescription medicines for ulcers make sure to use them before you apply Zilactin-B.
